Where to see Perseid meteors in the South Downs
August 11, 2016
The annual Perseid shower will reach its peak tonight and tomorrow (11 and 12 August) in the South Downs dark night skies. Astronomers estimate that around three or four meteors a minute are expected – twice as many as usual – starting from 10pm tonight and then continuing over the weekend. Visibility is likely to be best after midnight.
What better way to enjoy nature’s light show than snuggled in a blanket on the top of a hill in the the UK’s newest International Dark Sky Reserve.
Top stargazing spots in the South Downs:
- Midhurst area – explore the Open Access land on Iping, Stedham and Barlavington commons.
- Queen Elizabeth Country Park – get closer to the stars on top of Butser hill.
- The Downland car parks – Firle, Harting Down, Bignor and the Trundle make great stargazing points along the South Downs Ridge.
- Birling Gap – visit when the tide is out for a spectacular star gazing location.
- Old Winchester Hill – descend into the valley or stay up top and take in the Milky Way while the glow from Southampton sits on the horizon.
Tips on how to make the most of the darkness
- Take a blanket or mat to lie on
- Wrap up warm
- Take some snacks and a hot drink
- Take a compass or use the one on your smart phone
- Download a star gazing app to help you identify constellations and stars
- Allow time for your eyes to adjust – this takes around 20 minutes so turn off any lights, torches and put your mobile phone away
