The Flint Stones

The Flint Stones

29 October 2024

10.00 to 14.00

Join Rural Strides for The Flint Stones, a 5.5 mile walk, literally and metaphorically, unearthing the story behind flint ….. otherwise known as ‘Hampshire/Sussex Diamonds’.

After this walk you will never look at a flint wall the same way again. Fred and Wilma would surely have felt right at home in the Western Weald. We are surrounded by flint. It is so ubiquitous, you could easily be forgiven for thinking it was the local crop of choice.

Not that long ago people were employed to pick the flint off the fields. However, our connection with this much over-looked stone goes back much further in history. The Trundle, a former Neolithic causeway enclosure within a later Iron Age fort, is the perfect place to start this walk and historical story.

This is a slow walk with time to stop, look and chat about flint. Please expect it to take longer than your average 5 mile walk, especially when you also factor in a stop at a West Dean cafe.
