Butterfly Identification Workshop
13 May 2023
9:00 to 16:00
Join acclaimed butterfly expert, Neil Hulme for a full day learning how to identify butterflies on the Steyning Downland Scheme. Neil is a conservationist and wildlife guide with tremendous passion for butterflies. In 2017 his work to reverse the declines of rare butterflies was recognised with the award of a British Empire Medal and has since featured in the national press and on televison. The event offers full training in butterfly monitoring, as used by the staff of Butterfly Conservation.
The morning session will be at Steyning Athletics (see map, below), where we will learn how to identify all the butterflies commonly seen on the Steyning Downland. After lunch we will spend the afternoon a short walk away, visiting the Steyning Downland to put what we have learned into practice. By the end of the training event, participants will feel confident to join our regular butterfly monitoring programme. Our team of butterfly monitors collect vital information which we use to tailor our habitat management. A visit to see the newly established colony of the (very rare) Duke of Burgundy butterfly is also planned!
