Explore England’s Green & Pleasant Land
William Blake’s famous line is said to be inspired by the view of the South Downs from the window of the Earl of March county pub in Lavant. The best way to explore this area is on foot, so take advantage of the 100 mile long South Downs Way to get out there and get inspired!
Centurion Way is an easy to follow 5 mile trail along an old railway line and is accessible to bikes, buggies and wheelchairs. The trail runs between Chichester and West Dean, passing through Lavant about halfway. Perfect for a homage to Blake at the Earl of March.
At the northern end you’ll find West Dean Gardens and the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum. West Dean Gardens have been there since the original Manor House was built in 1622, most of the gardens you see today were laid out around the time Blake wrote ‘Jerusalem’.
At the southern end of Centurion Way, Chichester offers a more urban experience of culture and history. The modern art at Pallant House Gallery is one of the best in the country, while the Chichester Festival Theatre brings a wide variety of drama and shows to Sussex.
