Bike Week

Bike Week

June 10, 2016

National Bike Week starts on Saturday 11 June and we’re hoping this film of cycling in protected landscapes, including the South Downs National Park, inspires you to get out on your bike.

We have worked with local communities and bike hubs across the National Park to facilitate and encourage people of all ages and abilities to take up cycling, or cycle more, to improve health, reduce environmental impacts and create social bonds.

This work was funded by the Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF) and allowed us to work with Bespoke Biking in Winchester and Eastbourne Cycling Centre to recruit and train volunteers to become Cycle Ambassadors.

Now fully trained in bike handling and trail side maintenance, and easy to spot in their bespoke South Downs National Park cycle jackets, our Cycle Ambassadors are getting out and about encouraging people to discover how easy and accessible the South Down’s are via quiet lanes, extensive bridleway networks and shared paths.

Bike Week is the perfect catalyst to set up a cycling event to encourage less experienced riders to reap the benefits of cycling. The free Bike Week Love-to-Ride tool lets you register your cycle activity and potentially win prizes for riding and encouraging others too.

Bike Week also provides communities with the resources required, including Public Liability Insurance cover, to organise a bike event before the end of September. For more information on how to register a bike event visit Bike Week.

Looking for ride ideas? There are lots of great cycle rides in the South Downs and if you haven’t got a bike yet we’ve got a list of places you can hire from here.
