A different kind of National Walking Month
May 5, 2020
May is National Walking Month but, this year is different to say the least.
Many of you by now are probably missing the hills, woodlands and trails of the South Downs National Park.
But, just because we’re choosing to keep our activity local, doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate the joy of walking.
During this lockdown period, our relationship with walking has probably changed.
What might have once been rudimentary, perhaps even boring, has become a luxurious pursuit.
Details we once might have missed on our local walks have suddenly come into sharp focus, be that the symphony of birdsong, the colours of spring flowers or the scents of trees warming in the sun.
Keeping things local has also allowed many of us to notice the changing of the seasons in a way we might have previously ignored. Trees that six weeks ago were looking dormant and leafless are suddenly luscious and full. Local parks that might have seemed empty are buzzing with bees and flapping butterflies.
When the time is right, we will be gladly signposting to our favourite walks and trails across the National Park.
Until then, thank you for staying at home, staying local and keeping it safe.
