The South Downs National Park comprises a huge variety of valued landscapes.  They include the iconic open chalk downland and intimate, enclosed Wealden pastures that are found on sands and clays.

The South Downs is of national significance, protected for its Special Qualities, including inspirational landscapes shaped by farming, breath-taking views, the rich variety of wildlife and recreational opportunities.

Horses make an important contribution to the local rural economy through equine businesses, as well as the physical and mental wellbeing associated with riding and being around horses.

Their positive contribution extends to the landscape as valued grazing animals.

With sensitive management, horses are some of the best grazing livestock to help manage species-rich grasslands and happily the native, diverse species of grass and flowers also provide preferable forage for horses too.
