New development in the National Park needs to be designed in a ‘Landscape-led’ way. This means that the design choices need to be driven by the character of the site and its context. Another term for ‘Landscape-led design’ is ‘contextual design’.
The context of all development sites is the National Park, which has the highest designation for landscape quality. The word ‘landscape’ for these purposes is defined as everything that makes up the character of the place. This includes townscape, movement patterns, history and the perceptions of the place, as well as more conventional landscape characteristics, such as topography, vegetation, ecology and water.
New development needs to speak of its place and definitely not use design that results in ‘anywhere development’. Some examples of good landscape-led design in the National Park are demonstrated in the following case studies for different development types and scales:
