Location: This Dark Sky Discovery Site offers excellent views particularly for astrophotography and open access. One of the largest areas of ancient chalk downland, Harting Down in West Sussex is a renowned nature reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest. Plants found on the site include quaking grass and the common spotted orchid.
Archaeological evidence has suggested that Harting Down was first occupied around 5000 years ago. A 550-acre common owned by the National Trust and part of the Sussex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Harting Down rises 229 metres and offers panoramic views over the Weald to the north, to the English Channel and the Isle of Wight to the south.
